Space-saving console tables for bijou homes

Step through the front door, close it behind you, shrug off your coat, and what next? A console table comes forward to say, welcome home.

Put your keys down in this decorative bowl I’ve got for you, rest your bag on my lower shelf so it’s out of the way, observe my vase of très trend dried flowers and scented candle to set the mood. Console tables are just there when you need them – both useful and beautiful. Even in the skinniest of entryways, the smallest of sitting rooms and the longest, leaning landing areas, there’s a narrow console table that’ll slot right in. Cue our edit of the five console tables that work best in tight spots.

1. Sienna Console Table

Sienna is sleek and Sienna is chic, but that’s marble for you.

Coming in at a neat 90cm in width and only 25cm in depth, it’s certainly compact, but its arced edges shave off a few extra from the front too.

Add to that Sienna's fine black legs and ultra thin marble shelves and it’s guaranteed to not look too heavy in your space either.

2. Finley Console Table

Now, Finley comes in slightly longer and slightly deeper than the likes of Sienna, but it's still very much on the small side.

What makes this Mid-century table so savvy in a narrow room or passing place is that it's got display space on its top surface as well as two shelves slash drawers underneath – without the need to pull out an actual drawer. A godsend of a feature when you crave stowaway space, but using drawer storage would mean needing to stand to the side to even get to it.

3. Hansel Console Table

Narrow console tables are one thing, but combining space-saving creds while not neglecting storage is another.

With Sienna, you saw double the shelf space. With Finley, you got two generous cubbyholes, and with Hansel, you can lap up two layers of surface space and three removable tray shelves.

Fancy a TV dinner? No problem. Pick a tray, any tray.

4. Kir Console Table

Back to marble, step right up our smallest console table in the whole collection – Kir.

An adorable 80cm in width and a weeny 27cm in depth (though it also comes in a larger version if size isn't an issue), it’s in the dollhouse furniture category in terms of dimensions so even in the most bijou of studio apartments, Kir should be able to fit in.

Note the X marks the spot base – there to add some visual weight to the piece so it doesn’t feel so small and so lightweight that it loses stage presence.

5. Veylon Console Table

Two for one – that’s the deal with the Veylon console tables. And better still, both designs are created with compact spaces in mind.

A glamorous take on industrial design, each table is made out of sheet metal with either a brass lustre or powder coated matte black finish – another visually lightweight piece which counts for a lot if you want your space to not feel cluttered.

How you use the two is entirely up to you and what your home allows. Keep them together if you’ve only got room for one for now (the smaller fits neatly under the larger), pull the smaller out a few inches to give you a step-down ledge for extra surface space, or put one in another room altogether for style continuity points.
