What is the Difference Between an Ottoman and a Footstool?
Although the terms are often used interchangeably, ottomans and footstools serve slightly different purposes. The main difference between these two types of furniture is that ottomans usually have storage space inside - making them the perfect storage solution for smaller spaces.
What is a Footstool Used For?
Footstools are used as a place for resting your feet when relaxing on a chair or sofa and provide the perfect alternative to the chaise found on a corner sofa - especially in tighter spaces.
Larger footstools can also be styled as a coffee table and dressed with a tray. Ottomans are especially useful as coffee tables, as they allow you to store magazines, books and coasters inside, so they’re out of sight until you need them.
How to Clean a Fabric Footstool
When it comes to cleaning a fabric footstool, you should treat it in the same way as you would your fabric sofa. For regular cleans, simply vacuum your fabric footstool using the soft-bristled attachment, really concentrating on the areas that might hold on to dust and debris, such as the deep buttoning.
For spills, stains or marks from muddy shoes, the quicker you can act, the better. Start by dabbing the affected area with water and a soft cloth, but don’t rub, as this could spread the stain. Repeat as necessary until the stain has gone.
Can you Sit on a Footstool?
You might be surprised to learn that you can sit on a footstool - they provide the perfect perching place for when you have unexpected guests over and need some additional seating.
They also make great seating options for dressing tables, allowing you to tuck it underneath when it’s not in use.
How High Should a Footstool Be?
As a general rule, your footstool should be no higher than the seat of the sofa or chair it will be used for. In fact, the ideal height is around two inches lower than the seat of your chair for maximum comfort and style.
